Call for Papers: IQSA 2022 Annual Meeting Giorgio La Pira Library and Research Centre, Palermo, Italy

This year, the International Qur’anic Studies Association’s Annual Meeting will be held in Palermo, Italy, hosted by the Giorgio La Pira Library on September 5-7, 2022.

Paper proposals should be submitted to iqsa@fscire.it by March 7, 2022.

Please note that the IQSA membership is required for proposal submission (see below).

The 2022 Annual Meeting welcomes papers on any topic within the range of the interests of the Qur’anic text, encouraging in particular the submission of panels that gather selected speakers invited by a presenter. Individual papers will be

accepted as well.

Please note that all proposals for panels must include:

Presenter/chair name(s) and affiliation.
100-word short bio (written in English).
Panel title.
400-word paper abstract (written in English).
Speakers contacted and selected by the presenter and title of each paper.

Proposals for single papers must include:

Author name and affiliation.
100-word short bio (written in English).
Paper title.
400-word paper abstract (written in English).

Eligibility for proposal submissions is contingent upon the following:

1) Active IQSA membership is required at the time of proposal submission for the
IQSA Program, and the membership status of all applicants will be checked prior
to acceptance.

2) Participants must maintain current IQSA Membership through their
participation in the Annual Meeting.

Please also note that, in order to ensure equity and diversity amongst participants, only one paper presentation per IQSA Annual Meeting should be submitted by any individual participant.

All participants must adhere to IQSA’s Professional Conduct Policy.

Conference registration fees are structured as follows:

Registration by the end of June: 140 $
Registration by the end of July: 180 $
Registration in August and September: 220 $

Students and residents of the Global South will receive 50% discount on the proposed fees.

The Conference programme will circulate by the beginning of April 2022 and the registration will be opened by the beginning of May with all relevant details about the several available options and activities, like the booking accommodation and childcare facilities or the trip to Monreale and the guided visit of Palermo.

Reminder: Final Deadline for Andrew Rippin Best Paper Prize

A friendly reminder that the deadline for Andrew Rippin Best Paper Prize submissions has been extended to Monday, January 31, 2022, meaning you still have one week left before the call closes!

In honor of Andrew Rippin, the International Qur’anic Studies Association (IQSA) will award a prize to the best paper delivered at the 2021 hybrid Annual Meeting in San Antonio, TX by a graduate student or early career scholar (Ph.D. awarded 2016 or later). The prize winner will receive $250. In addition, the award committee will provide him/her with detailed feedback and guidance enabling him/her to expand the paper into a scholarly article that qualifies for publication in the Journal of the International Qur’anic Studies Association (JIQSA), subject to peer review. Interested scholars should submit a draft of the paper which they read at the most current Annual Meeting; this draft should be no longer than fifteen double-spaced pages (or 3750 words).

Submissions should be sent to contactus@iqsaweb.org by January 31, 2022. The winner should then be prepared to submit a fully revised version of the winning article by April 1, 2022. Publication of the final version is contingent upon review by the award committee and editorial staff of JIQSA.

IQSA Membership for 2022 Now Open!

IQSA Membership for 2022 is open! The International Qur’anic Studies Association (IQSA) is the first learned society dedicated to the study of the Qur’an. We hold conferences around the world and publish cutting-edge research and scholarship. The IQSA community and its partners include scholars, students, publishers, and members of the public.

Membership consists of six categories:

(1) Student, Contingent Faculty, Global South or Income Below $30,000 $35
(2) Assistant Professor, Junior or Retired Faculty $75
(3) Associate Professor or Midrange Faculty $100
(4) Full Professor, Senior Faculty or Professional Income $100,000+ $125
(5) Lifetime Member $2,000 (one time installment)
(6) Institutional Membership $400

Exceptions: Scholars from the global south and lower income countries unable to pay membership dues for that year have the option of contacting the executive director for a courtesy waiver.

To become a member, click HERE. Fill out the form and pay the membership fees. After completing the form, you will receive log in information; save that information to be able to log in and access member benefits at anytime. Create a profile for the member directory.

A Year in Sum: IQSA 2021

Despite continued challenges posed by by the global pandemic, it’s been a fruitful year for the International Qur’anic Studies Association. IQSA held its fourth biennial conference from July 4-11, 2021, hosted by the “Giorgio La Pira” Library (Palermo, Italy) for the first time in a completely virtual format. In addition, IQSA saw another first in its 2021 Hybrid Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the Society of Biblical Literature and American Academy of Religion, bringing together both physical participants in San Antonio, Texas and colleagues signing on virtually for panels, paper presentations, business meetings, and more.

IQSA continued to build upon its publishing portfolio this year, releasing the fifth volume of the Journal of the International Qur’anic Studies Association (Lockwood Press, 2020) edited by Nicolai Sinai (Oxford University). Publishing activity also includes the Review of Qur’anic Research (RQR), the world’s only exclusive review source on critical Qur’anic Studies. Finally, our multilingual blog and discussion group links a community of scholars and students across the globe.

In addition, IQSA welcomed a new Executive Director, Hythem Sidky, following in the steps of former director Emran El-Badawi. With a new Executive Director comes a new vision for expanded membership and outreach for the organization, including an improved and updated website, membership database, and meeting hosting platforms.

IQSA Annual Meeting Recordings

The International Qur’anic Studies Association’s 2021 Annual Meeting held online in San Antonio, Texas concluded last week, marking IQSA’s 15th conference held in conjunction with the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Academy of Religion. The 2021 Annual Meeting was the first of its kind—a hybrid conference with both in person and virtual attendees in response to the continued Covid-19 health situation.

All recorded sessions as participant permission allows will be available on-demand through January 31, 2022 to registered attendees. These recordings are available through the mobile app and online planner. If you missed a session, or want to rewatch a panel or presentation, be sure to do so before the videos expire!

Fellowship: Middle East Medievalists (MEM)

As promised in a July 2020 Statement on Anti-Racism, the Board of Directors of Middle East Medievalists (MEM) is pleased to announce the second round of applications for our new fellowship to support graduate students of color in medieval studies attending the annual meeting of the Middle East Studies Association (MESA). In light of uncertainties around travel to the 2021 meeting, we have decided to use this round to help graduate students of color who wish to attend (either virtually or in person) pay the registration fee.

In order to be considered in this round, please send a paragraph containing the following information to the MEM secretary (Zayde.Antrim@trincoll.edu): your graduate program/institutional affiliation; whether or not you are a MESA member; a brief statement about why you wish to attend the MESA annual meeting; and any other sources of funding available to you. We will review applications as they come in, so that we can fund as many as possible before MESA’s September 15 pre-registration deadline. We will continue to consider applications as long as we have funds available (up to our pledged total of $1500). Please note that we are willing to reimburse participants or attendees who have already paid the registration fee if they demonstrate need. Any questions about the process should be directed to the MEM secretary (Zayde.Antrim@trincoll.edu).
