Review of Qur’anic Research, Vol. 3 no.4 (2017)

In the latest installment of IQSA’s Review of Qur’anic Research, Devin Stewart (Emory University) reviews David Hollenberg’s Beyond the Qurʾān: Early Ismāʿīlī taʾwīl and the Secrets of the Prophets (Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 2016). The book is a discussion of taʾwīl, allegorical or symbolic interpretation of the Qurʾān, based mainly on Ismāʿīlī works from the tenth and eleventh centuries. It presents three main arguments: an overarching historical argument about the Ismāʿīlī daʿwah and other similar movements, and two more focused arguments on the nature of Ismāʿīlī taʾwīl and its use of biblical material.

IQSA Studies in the Qurʾan (ISIQ)

IQSA seeks proposals and suggestions for works to be included in its new monograph series, IQSA Studies in the Qurʾan (ISIQ). The Editorial Committee plans to publish in three areas:

  1. Scholarly monographs devoted to Qur’anic studies. Proposals that reflect the ethos of the Association – the analysis of the Qurʾan as a text of Late Antiquity – are especially welcome, although the Editorial Committee will consider proposals reflecting diverse approaches to the study of the text. We welcome proposals from both established scholars and from young scholars who have recently completed or are close to completing a doctoral thesis. The latter may want to consult William Germano, From Dissertation to Book (2nd edition) and idem, Getting It Published (2nd edition), for guidance on how to transform a PhD thesis into a book suitable for a wider readership.
  2. The republication of classic works no longer in copyright, and the translation of important works written in languages other than English. Because IQSA does not have in-house translators, translation proposals should identify a willing and competent translator – competence includes not only command of English and the source language, but also familiarity with the technical aspects of Qur’anic studies.
  3. A sub-series that will include Qurʾan study guides (vocabulary, concordances, etc.), the proceedings of the bi-annual IQSA international conferences, and the collected essays, e.g., of distinguished Qur’an scholars.

The monograph series Director, Dr. David Powers [email: dsp4@cornell.edu], warmly welcomes any proposals for this series.

From Medina to Oxford, from Codex to the Cloud: Scenes from the Life of the Qur’an

Venue:            Lecture Theatre, Weston Library, Oxford
Speaker(s):    Nicolai Sinai, University of Oxford; Alasdair Watson & Keith Small, Bodleian Libraries
Date/Time:     30 May 2017, 4:00- 6:00 PM
In a collaborative presentation, three Oxford scholars will present crucial waystations in the life of the Qur’an. Nicolai Sinai will guide the audience through current research seeking to reconstruct the literary genesis of the Qur’anic texts in late antique Arabia; Alasdair Watson will examine how early modern collectors and adventurers first introduced Qur’anic manuscripts to European libraries, including the Bodleian; and Keith Small will show how Qur’anic codices that have been dispersed by the vagaries of early modern manuscript hunting can now be virtually reunited by cutting-edge digital technology.
All are welcome but tickets must be reserved in advance.
