Reminder: IQSA Graduate Student Roundtable Tomorrow

Attention all graduate students and early career scholars!

Every year the International Qur’anic Studies Association hosts a Graduate Student Luncheon at the IQSA Annual Meeting held in conjunction with the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and Society of Biblical Literature (SBL). This event is a valuable opportunity for emerging scholars to mingle with established experts in Qur’anic studies in a more relaxed setting.

In keeping with this year’s new Annual Meeting format, this event will take place virtually as a Graduate Student Roundtable over Zoom tomorrow on December 3, 2020 from 11am to 12pm EST. To participate, visit the SBL Annual Meeting Page and choose Register for the Annual Meeting. Then, complete a New Registration under the Affiliate Members category, and choose International Qur’anic Studies Association when prompted. Then, use the Virtual Meetings Platform to locate and log into the event (P3-112a). This event is free for anyone who has registered for the Annual Meeting.

Participants should be prepared to discuss the following questions:

Bring your questions for IQSA to the General & Business Meetings!

Dear Friends of IQSA,

Today IQSA members and the general public will have the opportunity to gather virtually as a group for the IQSA Annual Business and General Meetings. As we are not able to convene in person this year, this will be a valuable opportunity for members and the wider community to converse in a group setting for discussion of important agenda items, including but not limited to elections, plans for future meetings, and IQSA’s annual operations.

We invite you to use this opportunity to bring any questions or concerns you might have for IQSA Leaders and Officers to either or both of the below sessions. IQSA representatives will do their best to answer and address all inquiries, especially in light of the challenging times we are facing as a global community of scholars today.

  • Business Meeting Wednesday DEC 2, 10-11AM EST
    • Members Only
  • General Meeting Wednesday DEC 2, 11:30AM-12:30PM EST
    • Open to Public

Attendees can find links and instructions on accessing sessions through the Virtual Planner at this link. Because of this year’s virtual meeting format on Zoom, meeting registration is required for participation.

Call for Papers: Princeton Medieval Studies Graduate Conference March 6, 2020

cropped-ericdocs-1Princeton University will hold a Zoom graduate conference on March 6, 2020. The  theme of the conference is: “Reclaiming Losses: Recovery, Reconquest, and Restoration in the Middle Ages.” The conference’s keynote address will be given by Professor Hussein Fancy, Associate Professor of History at the University of Michigan.

Description: Loss can be accepted or contested. This conference will consider how perceptions of legacy and entitlement stirred ambitions to reassert lost claims from Late Antiquity through the Late Middle Ages. From the last great war of antiquity between Persia and Rome to Charlemagne’s Roman renovatio, Byzantine expansion, contestation over Iberia, and the later crusades, many medieval conflicts were justified as campaigns to reconquer and restore past order. Beyond political and territorial pursuits, contemporaries sought to reclaim losses of all kinds, whether legal, economic, intellectual, social, cultural, physical, emotional, or spiritual.

This conference will explore the circumstances under which medieval people made claims to past legacies, how they asserted those claims, and what it meant to express them as calls for restitution. How did contemporary understandings of legacy and entitlement factor into perceptions of loss? How did the motive to restore a loss—whether real or imagined—shape contemporary choices and their outcomes? When was loss understood as a fundamental challenge to individual or collective identity and what resulted from such challenges?

To this end, we invite 300-word proposals for fifteen- to twenty-minute talks on topics examining recovery, reconquest, and restoration in the Middle Ages. We welcome proposals covering any region of the world reflecting the time frame encompassing approximately 500-1500 CE. Please submit proposals or requests for more information to emedawar@princeton.edu.  Proposals should be submitted by November 6, 2020, and applicants will be notified of decisions by November 16, 2020.

The conference will be held on March 6, 2021 and will take place over Zoom.  Participation from any location is, therefore, warmly welcomed.
